Hey there, "Leaving Religion." It is true that you are definitely not alone in your feelings. But, there are others of us (like me!) for whom Jesus (or perhaps you would prefer, the idea of Jesus) became MORE of a reality with age, rather than less.

I'm certainly not arguing with your experience; I believe all you write here is what you have experienced, and I respect that! But my own experience has been different.

Hope you are having a lovely day~

You see, it's not okay to stand on someone's word that Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven. The thing about Christian churches is that many of them are prideful (Sin?) and want to increase their own church attendance (again, selfish, not selfless). That is why many churches will state "You can only get to heaven if you attend this kind of church" which is simply not true. The Bible is the only solid thing that we can stand on. "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words will not." I have argument after argument, but there is no sense in trying to convince anyone of one religion or another.

[...] As I laid out in detail, this country was NOT founded on Christianity. It wasn’t, never has been. Why people must insist on twisting the truth is beyond me. The forefathers would turn in their grave today if they saw how much religion has infiltrated our Government and laws. It would sicken them, because this is the very thing they were leaving behind and faught a war to gain freedom from.
Rather than skirting away from the issue, as you mentioned, a lot of churches actually try to make it sound like a good thing. It's striking just how far people will go to justify things.

I don't understand how someone can make justifications for a book that says women simply aren't as good as men. It really feels just as the sections that permit slavery, child abuse, and all of the other things that primitive men thought was okay. It's all along the same vein.

If it's not okay to still sell your daughters into slavery, then what makes it okay to tell her to submit to a man for the rest of her life? Where in the Bible does it make the distinction?

As I said elsewhere...

As he believes that praying will be answered by god without a doubt, he should be thrown in jail for attempted murder. It’s the same as hiring an assassin… to him.

A two hour nap on a Sunday is the best way to celebrate freedom!

Oh, and as you referenced above... I'm not even including my old weekday and Saturday schedule. If the church doors were open, I was pretty much there. So glad I gave that up.

That's my kind of Sabbath. I just woke up from a 2 hour nap. When I was heavily involved in the worship ministry I would not only give up my entire Sunday or Saturday, but a few weeknights as well.

Being bombarded with an excessively busy "religious" schedule is not spiritual or fulfilling. It's a huge waste of precious time.

Have a great time at the Bill Maher event in Atlanta... should be a good time. I don't always agree with him, but he hit the nail on the head with this movie.

Will be checking out your blog today. Thanks for the nice words about mine.

I'm a fan of Bill Maher. He's coming to Atlanta in a couple of weeks and I have tickets. Religulous was funny and frustrating and sad to me. Since leaving christianity in the 80s, I progressed through the various stages (of grief?) with the help of therapy, drugs, grad school, books, books, books. I've intuitively arrived at my own truth. Yet the one hot button remains for me the christianists of the religious right. I despise what they represent and I do my best to speak out against their hypocrisy. Like you, I actually felt compassion for those in Religulous who seemed to earnestly believe. I can't judge them because I was one of them and am still surrounded by various family members who are sincere in their beliefs. I am not as adamantly anti-religion as Bill, but I do see him as a voice in the wilderness for the dangerous side of religion. And I applaud him for that.

On another note, I want to tell you how much I'm enjoying your blog. Just discovered it the other day. If you're curious about my beliefs (currently!), check out www.blog.citymystic.net

Have a lovely weekend!
